History

1882Tokyo College established.
1902Renamed Waseda University.
1908Science and Engineering Department established, along with the Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering departments.
1909Mining Department and Architecture Department established.
1916Applied Chemistry Department established.
1920Became a university under the New University Act, and the Science and Engineering Department renamed the Science and Engineering Division. Graduate School established.
1938Applied Metallurgy Department established within the Science and Engineering Division; Casting Research Center established.
1939Special Division of Engineering and Science instituted.
1940Science and Engineering Division Research Laboratory established.
1942Electrical Communication Department established within the Science and Engineering Division.
1943Industrial Management Department and Civil Engineering Department established within the Science and Engineering Division; Science and Engineering Division Research Center reorganized as the Science and Engineering Research Center.
1949Waseda University established under the new system of education; eleven departments created within the First Science and Engineering Division: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining, Architecture, Applied Chemistry, Metallurgy, Electrical and Communication Engineering, Industrial Management, Civil Engineering, Applied Physics, and Mathematics. Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, and Civil Engineering established within the Second Science and Engineering Division.
1951Graduate School Master's Degree Program established at Waseda University under the new system of education. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, and Applied Chemistry established as specialties within the Engineering Research Department.
1953Doctoral Degree Program established in the Graduate School Research Department.
1954Engineering Research Department' s Applied Physics Major established.
1961Engineering Research Department renamed the Science and Engineering Research Department; Mathematics Major established; First Science and Engineering Division' s Mining Department renamed the Resource Engineering Department.
1965Physics Department established within the First Science and Engineering Division.
1967Campus relocated to the Okubo Campus.
1968Second Science and Engineering Division abolished, and First Science and Engineering Division renamed the Science and Engineering Division.
1972Science and Engineering Division' s Electrical and Communication Engineering Department renamed the Electronic and Communication Engineering Department.
1973Chemistry Department established in the Science and Engineering Division; Science and Engineering Research Department's Applied Physics Major renamed the Physics and Applied Physics Major.
1979Environment Preservation Center established.
1987Science and Engineering Division' s Metallurgy Department renamed the Materials Engineering Department.
1988Casting Research Center renamed the Kagami Memorial Technical Research Institute; Engineering Research Department's Mining and Metallurgy Major renamed the Resource and Material Engineering Major.
1990Science and Engineering Research Department Chemistry Major established.
1991Computer and Information Science Department established within the Science and Engineering Division.
1993Science and Engineering Research Laboratory reorganized as the Advanced Research Institute for Science and Engineering General Research Center.
1995Major in Electronics, Information and Communication Engineering and Major in Computer and Information Science established in the Engineering Research Department; Mathematics Major renamed Mathematical Sciences Major.
1996Science and Engineering Division' s Electrical Engineering Department renamed the Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Department, and the Industrial Management Department renamed the Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Department.
1997Science and Engineering Division' s Electrical and Communication Engineering Department renamed the Electronics, Information and Communication Engineering Department.
1998Science and Engineering Division' s Resource Engineering Department renamed the Resources and Environmental Engineering Department; the Materials Engineering Department renamed the Materials Science and Engineering Department; and the Mathematics Department renamed the Mathematical Sciences Department.
2001In the Graduate School of Science and Engineering: Major in Mineral Resources Engineering & Materials Science Engineering renamed Major in Science and Engineering of Environment, Resources and Materials; Mineral Resources Engineering Specialization was renamed Earth sciences, Resources and Environmental Engineering Specialization; Major in Integrative Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering established.
2003In the School of Science and Engineering:
The Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering, the Department of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineering and the Department of Information and Computer Science reorganized into the Department of Electrical Engineering and Bioscience and the Department of Computer Science.
In the Graduate School of Science and Engineering:
Major in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Specialization reorganized as Major in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering. Major in Architecture and Civil Engineering, Architecture Specialization reorganized as Major in Architecture. Mojor in Electrical Engineering, Major in Electronics, Information and Communication Engineering and Information and Major in Computer Science reorganized into Major in Electrical Engineering and Bioscience and Major in Computer Science. Major in Nano-Science and Nano-Engineering established.
The Depatment of Civil Engineering renamed the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
